June '22 Newsletter
A belated June newsletter after the Queens Platinum Jubilee festivities, during which I found myself painting this little picture of her ‘Maj’ after Lucian Freud. I love Lucian’s colours and strokes and am always drawn to his portraits.
With the summer finally here, I’ll be taking time off to visit the many fantastic art Galleries around the UK.
The Queen’s Gallery is a public art gallery next to Buckingham Palace and most definitely worth a visit!
The Royal Collection there holds about 450 works including some stunning drawings from Leonardo da Vinci and paintings from two of my favourite Dutch artists, Rembrandt and Vermeer.
For summer, there is also a Japanese art and craftsmanship exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery entitled Japan: Courts and Culture. I can’t wait to see the Japanese royal and imperial family collection, including an intriguing and very delicate selection of folding screen artwork. My father was a great admirer and collector of Japanese Imari porcelain, a few pieces of which I was lucky enough to have inherited!
Wishing you a happy and healthy June,
David
