February 2023 Newsletter
This months’ newsletter is about the ever-popular Jean- Michel Basquiat. Basquiat is the most enquired about artist for commissions that I receive. Luckily, I love painting in the street, graffiti, Neo-expressionism style of this fantastic artist. Basquiat was a New York artist, of Haitian decent who died far too young, from a heroin overdose in 1988, aged 27, joining The 27 Club – a whole host of other brilliant artists who died at the same age, including Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Amy Winehouse, Brian Jones, and Jimi Hendrix.
Basquiat had a great way of telling a story through his art. He seemed to work out the painting whilst working on it, seeing what worked, what came to his mind at the time, crossing out and layering current feelings and emotions. His life inspired his works, depicting, for example, his time spent in hospital after an accident as a child and treasured stories told to him by his mother. His large-scale paintings in mixed media and his love for Caravaggio and the old masters, also evident in his work, make recreating Basquiat so exciting.
