David Henty Art January 2022 Newsletter
Firstly, I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.
Having had rather a quiet Christmas, I indulged myself in creating yet another Caravaggio. I have always wanted to attempt ‘Doubting Thomas’ also known as ‘The Incredulity of Saint Thomas’ painted by Caravaggio c.1601/02, this time starting the painting in the way practiced by the old masters.
Utilising the Grisaille technique, I primed the canvas with a mid-tone, then painted the composition using only a monochromatic palette. Happy with the foundations, it was time to build up layers of dark and light tints, adding glazes of colour, somewhat like putting filters on a photo! It’s the first time I’ve tried this style but not the last. I’ve enjoyed it immensely.
This year I’ll hopefully be able to visit the painting in person, which resides in the Sanssouci Picture Gallery in Potsdam, Germany. I always try to visit the paintings I wish to recreate to see the artists hand close up (and if the guards aren’t looking touch the canvas to see if I can connect to the artist!!).
