Spring and The Almond Blossoms
What better way to celebrate spring and Van Gogh’s birthday than to share “Almond Blossom Trees” with you, symbolising new life and new beginnings.
Van Gogh painted this beautiful picture in 1890 to celebrate the birth of his nephew, namesake and godchild. Vincent was influenced from the Japanese print. The almond tree blooming and flowering announces the beginning of spring, and represents awaking and hope.
The painting was a gift for Vincent Willem, and, in a letter to Vincent from his brother, Theo wrote, “As we told you, we’ll name him after you, and I’m making the wish that he may be as determined and courageous as you”. Unsurprisingly, it was this work that remained closest to the hearts of the Van Gogh family. Vincent Willem later went on to found the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
