Painting Of The Week - David Henty's recreation of Caravaggio 'Head of Goliath'

This week we have chosen a slightly darker version from David's collection. This is a snipet of the original 'David with the Head of Goliath'.

Caravaggio painted his own head decapitated in a plea for mercy from the Pope.

Caravaggio was under a death sentence for the murder of his enemy Ranuccio Tomassoni.

This sketch is part of David's working method - getting to know the painting before he paints the full piece he sketches parts of the painting, solving problems throughout the process.

Then, when David comes round to painting the full-size painting, he is able to paint at the same speed, confidence and artistic zeal as Caravaggio would have done when painting the original.

The original painting for this weeks Painting of the Week is in Rome, in the Galleria Borghese.

David will be recreating the full-size painting to showcase in our exhibition this year in June.
